Wall Rock

Wall rock is simply a small boulder (or big rock?) about the size of a basketball with a weight of 25-150 lbs. The smaller size range allows for building retaining walls by hand without the use of heavy equipment. Wall rocks also work well as highlights in smaller landscapes.

For a more uniform look and easier installation, we also sell wall blocks made from concrete. Whatever you're looking for in your wall rocks, we can help.

Columns and Slabs

Columnar Basalt

These naturally occurring formations are guaranteed to add a dynamic element to any landscape. Custom fabrication can take it a step further. From a custom carved column rock to a simple step up to the deck, there are many purposes for which these stones may be used.

Columnar basalt is very unique to our geographic area. Column rock is so dynamic because of its strong linear lines. The possibilities are endless as they are often used in water fountains, as “bubblers”, benches, accent pieces, and many more custom fabrications. We offer gray Columbia River columns and Bronze columns which are black with a “bronze” patina exterior.

Gresham Rock Supply FAQ

  • When are you open?

We are open to the general public and landscaping professionals during the following days and hours:

    Summer Hours: (Mar-Oct) M-F 7:30-5:30, Sat 8-5, Sun 10-4.
    Winter Hours: (Nov-Feb) M-F 7:30-4:30, Sat 9-4, closed Sunday

  • Do you sell rock by weight or volume?

Most rock products are sold by the pound or ton. We will usually weigh your vehicle or trailer before and after it is loaded, and take the difference as the weight of the product.

Some types of rock can be picked up by the pallet. For a pallet of rocks for building walls or patios, stop by!

  • How much does 1 yard of rock weigh?

Round rock or river rock weighs probably about a ton per cubic yard. A pallet of rock material is typically between 3000-4000 lbs. The exact weight of rock per cubic yard will depend on the density of the rock.

  • How many pounds are in a ton of rock?

A ton weighs 2,000 lbs, whether that's gravel, river rock, bark, sand, or anything else for that matter.

  • What is the minimum amount of rock product I can order?

There is no minimum for rock products. We do ask a ½ yard minimum for those products sold by volume when our front loader is used to load it.Feel free to bring in your own containers for smaller quantities. We will simply measure your containers and charge accordingly.

  • How much round rock will I require?

You can use our calculator to help figure out the amount and cost of rock you will need. The amount is determined by measuring the length, width, height, and depth of the material needed for your project and multiplying.

  • What's the difference between river rock and round rock?

There is no difference - they are the same thing. This product can also be called drain rock (though the size of the rock will affect its ability to drain well for different applications)

  • Why don't I see "slate" as a category of stone?

Slate is a type of dark-colored rock - metamorphic, specifically - which naturally breaks flat. This makes it work well as a flagstone (any flat rock), so some flagstones are slate rocks. However, not all flagstones are slate - there are many options of natural and manmande alternatives to slate. Of course, slate isn't limited to being walked on - there are all kinds of applications for it, as well, besides being a flagstone.

  • Do I have to load my own vehicle?

We have equipment to handle most of the heavy lifting, however if you have an enclosed vehicle it may be difficult for our equipment to safely load it so loading by hand may become necessary.

  • How do I know how much rock my vehicle can haul?

The short answer is a full size pickup can typically haul up to one yard of rock. A small compact pickup will be half that or less. The GVW rating for your vehicle (typically located on the driver’s side door frame or in your owner’s manual) is the maximum total gross weight allowed per your manufacturer’s specifications. We have a drive-on scale so when you arrive we can determine at that point how much may be safely loaded, depending on your scale or tare weight.

  • Do you deliver, and how much will it cost?

Delivery is available and prices vary depending on product type, quantity, and destination but typically runs $65+ for local dump truck deliveries. 1-2 days is usually enough time to schedule deliveries, and sometimes we can do it the same day, but that depends on availability. A discounted $25 delivery charge is available for nearby bark or compost orders and select soil orders of 8 yards at a time!

As a Uhaul neighborhood rental center we also have Uhaul trucks/trailers available much of the time. They are a good value for hauling small loads, and a GREAT value compared to a forklift truck when hauling pallets of product (though you unload by hand). Call ahead for availability and pricing.
